KICK-OFF...

Thursday's pre-game communiqué for DC Stoddert Families

Players at Carter Barron had some fun around their morning games last Saturday as DC United's Lewis Neal set up shop, gave away "stress balls" and magnets, and signed autographs. Account executive Jeff Homens also had information on hand about upcoming matches and summer camps. (Information is available at www.dcunited.com ... next home game is next Wednesday 5/8 vs. Houston.)

Sunday we had a coaches' clinic on set plays (augmented by some terrific U13 boys) and goalkeeping clinics at Hearst field. Then 25 high school girls from 4 different rec teams participated in a shooting clinic at Fort Stevens. The three of us staff coaches had a blast working with them!

If YOU have an idea for a clinic you would like me to conduct for players, please let me know. I can work with boys and girls of all ages and will add staff for large groups.

HOUSEKEEPING

Most games were entertaining and flowed smoothly, from my perspective. DC Stoddert staff and volunteers are aware that the field lines were lacking and the grass was too long at Carter Barron. Thanks for your patience last weekend; both should improve this weekend.

At the U8 games, teams begin playing with goalkeepers. Although the kids are new to the concept, please refrain from standing behind the goals. Too many parents were coaching the goalkeepers from behind the goals, which was distracting to the kids. Instead, please let them play and they will learn from the game.

One final issue refers to practices. While no team younger than U7 has "official" field permits from Stoddert, some teams do go out to get touches on the ball if they find their own field space. While it is OK for players younger than 7 to have skills practices, they should never practice longer than 45 minutes. The bulk of the practices should be done with a player:ball ratio of 1:1, with a short scrimmage at the end of practice.

COACHING CLINICS: IDEAS TO USE IN YOUR SPRING PRACTICES

SUNDAYS from 12:00 - 1:00 pm at Hearst Field

VISITING COACHES: FREE SESSION WITH A PROFESSIONAL COACH

Sometimes you need fresh ideas for your practices. Each recreational team is eligible to have 2 free sessions per year with a professional coach. The idea is for the pro to work WITH the recreational coach present, not to act as a substitute coach. If you would like to set up one or two of these sessions, please email kate@stoddert.com with your team name, age group, and practice venue/day/time.

Concerns over the weekend? Email me Monday morning at kate@stoddert.com

Have fun this weekend!
